Ryder Talcott

Director of Experiential Programs - Lead Teacher

Ryder grew up on the south shore of Massachusetts. As a kid, he spent nearly all his time playing and exploring in the woods, often climbing trees, getting muddy, and building forts. He spent so much time in the woods that his mother needed to use a cowbell to summon him for dinner and bedtime, as it was always difficult to know where he would wander. From finding frogs and newts to eventually climbing mountains and teaching adventure sports- Ryder has always had a deep passion for playing outdoors and introducing others to the joy and freedom of outdoor adventures.

Ryder graduated from Stetson University with a Sport & Recreation Management degree and is nearly finished earning his Master of Education degree in Experiential Education & Development. Ryder is also pursuing his professional guiding certifications with the American Mountain Guiding Association (AMGA). Together we create the team behind Maverick Outdoors and Mini Mavericks Preschool. We wanted to combine our experiences with our education to create a company with values that are important to us. We wholeheartedly believe in the powers of community and the outdoors and aim to instill curiosity, kindness, and confidence in our future generations of outdoor mavericks.

We met in 2008 during our undergraduate years at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. We relocated to New England for five years following college. However, in 2017, we decided we needed a change, realizing that city life was unfulfilling for us and didn’t support our lifestyles or passions. We decided to backpack the entire Appalachian Trail that year, so we sold our house and most of our belongings and completed the 2,180-mile journey in just over five months. During our trip, we hatched the idea to open an outdoor and adventure education company for families with young children.

After finishing the trail, we decided to move to Oregon to live in a place that better fit our values and passion for the outdoors. Since arriving in Oregon, we have fallen in love with all the opportunities and the community it has provided us. Ultimately, our idea that hatched while on trail eventually came to fruition in September of 2022 as we opened up the first of our programs- an outdoor-based preschool: Mini Mavericks. It is our time to give back to the outdoor community and offer services and experiences that align with our values and those within our community.

A fun fact about us and our love for the outdoors is that we try to camp outdoors at least 100 days each year and have been fortunate enough to do so for five of the past six years. Outside work, you will find us backpacking, climbing mountains, mountain biking, playing with our dog (Maverick!), socializing with friends, and generally adventuring in the great outdoors. We recently got married after nearly 14 years together and are excited to start this new chapter and develop a community of like-minded mavericks! We are both deeply passionate about the outdoors and look forward to sharing our expertise with you!

If you have any questions about who we are or would like to grab a coffee, ski a run, or hop on a trail together one day, we would love to meet you!
